Take a moment to think –

Close your eyes for a minute and think of your favorite possession. What do you love about that possession? When have you had to give up something that you really liked? Why is it hard to give up the things we really like?

This week’s Bible story is about someone who was asked to give up a lot.

Read the following story –

Once there was a young man who loved God very much. He followed all the rules about living in God’s way. Because he had a lot of money, the man was able to give to others as well as giving a generous offering to the temple. He took time to pray in the temple and tried his best to please God each day, but still he felt like something was missing. The man had heard about Jesus, and knew that he was a good teacher. Maybe Jesus could help him. One day the man called one of the servants and said, “Please bring my robe and sandals, I must find Jesus.” He caught up with Jesus and the disciples just as they were leaving to go to the special Passover festival in Jerusalem. The man was so keen to talk with Jesus that he ran up and knelt down in front of Jesus. He pleaded with Jesus, saying, “I’ve heard about you. You have fed people and healed and taught, and you have shown us what a world filled with God’s love could be like. “All my life I have tried to live in the way God wants me to. I’ve done everything that the scriptures command. And yet, I still feel that there is something missing. Jesus, what must I do to make a difference?”

Jesus looked straight at the man and felt so much love for him. Jesus looked into his eyes, and answered. “I see how much you love God and how sincerely you’re trying to live in God’s loving way. But God is asking you to trust that all you need is God. Let go of everything else. Come and follow me.” The man stood up and stared at Jesus. He didn’t say anything but he thought to himself, “Give it all up? Give it all away? Just head out on the road with Jesus?” It was the last thing he expected to hear. He had a lot of things, and it was hard to think of letting go. The man walked away slowly, not ready to say anything yet. He knew deep in his heart what he should do, and he knew it was going to be difficult.
